What are Modern Fonts?

Most people are under the impression that modern fonts are the most recent typefaces. Typographers, on the other hand, claim that they belong to an older category of fonts popular in the 1800s and have vertical letters, thin horizontal serifs, and contrasted strokes.

On the other hand, typeface design in the year 2023 has progressed significantly past the limitations in the fonts of the 1800s.

Designers take great pride in breaking the norms of typography by modifying traditional fonts to give them a more modern appearance. In 2023, most contemporary fonts are sans serif and can feature geometric, futuristic, abstract, or urban styles.

Popular modern typefaces such as Bodoni, Helvetica, Avenir, and Futura each reflect a unique interpretation of what a modern typeface should be like. This interpretation has evolved over the course of several decades. They are installed by default on most computers in use today and are utilized by companies worldwide.

Characteristics of Modern Fonts

In the field of typography, Modern is a categorization devised in the latter half of the 18th century and was used throughout most of the 19th century. It is also known as Didone and Neoclassical. It was a significant departure from the standard typography of that era.

It is more difficult to read fonts from the Modern classification because they have a vertical axis, a high contrast between thick and thin strokes, and flat hairline serifs. This makes them more challenging to read than type styles produced for text earlier or later. In contrast to the transitional designs that came before them, these fonts have a more recognizable identity.

Some later variations of Modern fonts include slab serifs, which have bold square serifs (often considered an entirely different classification), and the related Clarendon style, which has less contrast and softer, rounded outlines. Both of these styles are examples of later variations of Modern fonts.

One variety of slab serifs called Fat Faces might be thought of as Didone (or Modern) on steroids since it features fattened strokes that give the impression that the flat, hairline serifs are even thinner and more severe. Some modern fonts fall into the “Fat Face” slab serif group when they are styled in the “Bold,” “Ultra,” or “Poster” variations.

Uses for Modern Fonts

Modern fonts make a stunning impression when used as headlines or headings. They frequently function admirably in logos as well. In the bodily copy, however, they do not function very effectively. It is difficult to see modern typefaces at smaller sizes since their thin strokes tend to disappear altogether.

Another situation in which you should avoid utilizing modern fonts is when you need to use reversed type for a print project. As a result of the fact that ink on paper tends to spread slightly, the incredibly thin strokes of modern fonts may become lost in an area that contains the reversed text.
